Women’s health and pelvic floor function
Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation
Pelvic floor rehabilitation is a comprehensive physiotherapy process in which pelvic floor muscle function is assessed and an individual treatment plan is built. For problems affecting bladder, bowel and pelvic floor function, individual treatment programmes are planned and delivered in line with scientific assessment and current rehabilitation practice.
The pelvic floor is the layer of muscle and connective tissue forming the base of the pelvis. It has several roles, including bladder and bowel control, supporting the organs and stabilising the trunk.
A common misconception
Not every pelvic floor complaint stems from muscle weakness. In some cases the muscles are overly tense, and strengthening exercises can make the complaint worse. This is why an exercise programme should only be planned after a functional assessment.
Assessment and programme
The process begins with a detailed history. The functional state of the pelvic floor muscles is then examined and an individual programme is built.
The programme is not exercise alone; adjusting bladder and bowel habits, advice for daily life and, where needed, breathing and trunk stabilisation work are all part of it.
Privacy
Assessment and treatment take place one-to-one in a private room. What will happen at each stage is explained in advance and your consent is taken. The process moves entirely at the pace you are comfortable with.
