Safe movement during pregnancy and after birth

Pregnancy and Postnatal Rehabilitation

Pregnancy and Postnatal Rehabilitation

Musculoskeletal problems that arise during pregnancy and after birth are assessed, and safe exercise and rehabilitation programmes are delivered.

Pregnancy brings both hormonal and biomechanical change. The forward shift of the centre of gravity, softening of connective tissue and stretching of the abdominal muscles can all lead to complaints in the lower back, pelvis and mid-back.

During pregnancy

In pregnancies with no contraindications, appropriately planned exercise is generally recommended. The programme is planned taking into account how far along you are, any complaints you have, and the view of the doctor overseeing your care.

  • Assessment of lower back and pelvic complaints
  • A safe exercise programme and positioning advice
  • Breathing and pelvic floor awareness work
  • Adjustments to daily activity and resting positions

After birth

In the postnatal period the abdominal wall, pelvic floor and spine are assessed together. When the programme starts depends on the type of birth, how recovery is progressing and medical clearance.

The aim is to support a gradual, safe return to everyday activity and, where relevant, to your sporting routine.
